Storm-weary Hawaii Island residents stock up for Moke amid ongoing Lala cleanup

PAHOA (HawaiiNewsNow) – On the southeast and east sides of Hawaiʻi Island, residents said they should have prepared more for Hurricane Lala, and that’s what they’re doing now, ahead of Tropical Storm Moke.

At Kīlauea Lodge and Restaurant, a long line stretches out the door for another food distribution site with workers passing out plates of pasta.

“It’s a relief to huge relief. I was here for the eruption, same thing; then there’s the community comes together,” said Pāhoa resident Ima Mana.

“Makes me feel so happy that there’s people out here willing to share and willing to donate this wonderful food,” added Royal Hawaiian Estates resident Mychael Moe.

Many there have been without power since Hurricane Lala and can’t cook their own food.

“It just feels endless, it does, and yet I look at the calendar six days, you know I can camp for six days, but it is wearing thin,” said Volcano resident Kate Hall.

At the Ace in Pahoa, area residents also without power since Lala want to make sure they’re ready for Moke and are buying up supplies and filling up propane tanks.

Those are the items residents in Hilo have been stocking up on too.

“Same thing every year basically, be ready so you don’t have to get ready, so stay ready. Make sure you get all your water. Everything you need, gas, propane,” said Pahoa resident Gordon Gonsalves.
