UH Wahine soccer gets first win of the season, downing Idaho 2-0

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaiʻi women’s soccer team secured its first victory of the season Saturday, shutting out Idaho 2-0 to close out the Outrigger Soccer Invitational.

Senior transfer Anuhea Aluli, a Kamehameha Schools Kapālama graduate, scored the opening goal in the 24th minute. It was her second goal of the year.

Then in the 79th minute, freshman Olivia Dianda extended the lead with her second goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Kennedy Justin anchored the defense with six saves to seal the clean sheet against the Vandals.

“For us to able to get a win versus a seasoned opponent like this, it really shows the amount of growth we have,” Justin told Hawaii News Now’s Cienna Pilotin following the match. “Once our returners get back, I mean, we’re gonna be pretty good.”

The victory was a strong rebound for the Rainbow Wahine after a sluggish 3-1 loss to Western Michigan on Thursday.

“I have a ton of respect for (the Idaho) coaching staff. We’ve been friends for many, many years, so we knew this was going to be a game,” head coach Michele Nagamine said. “For us to come out and get the first win on our home field sure does feel good. I’m really happy for the women.”

Up next, the Rainbow Wahine faces Hawaiʻi Pacific in a home match. Broadcast coverage on K5 begins at 3:30 p.m.
