UH soccer team spends weekend on Maui for competition and connection

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaii women’s soccer team spent the weekend on Maui for an exhibition match hosted by Seattle U.

The Rainbow Wahine took on the Redhawks at King Kekaulike High School in upcountry Maui

The friendly match lasted a full game plus a 15-minute overtime period.

“Nobody’s gonna be perfect, we just want them to play, get used to each other,” UH head coach Michele Nagamine told Hawaii News Now. “Get to know the tendencies of their teammates a little bit more, hopefully increase communication and really put all of the different pieces together that we’ve been working on.“

The team ended Sunday with a keiki clinic, but the weekend started with an impactful trip to Lahaina on the third anniversary of the devastating wildfires.

Along with Seattle U, UH participated in community service work and adorned lei on the memorial for the victims.

“It’s a very defining moment for us as a team, you could tell just the closeness, the laughter, the camaraderie, and then driving through the towns with, you know, just that eerie silence,” Nagamine said. “Very, very moving for, I think all the van drivers and for our team.”

UH returns to Oahu this week to officially open the season on August 13th.
