Sister of Maui man beaten to death while feeding cats describes terrifying attack
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The sister of a Maui man beaten to death in Kahului took the stand in court Wednesday, describing the terrifying encounter that claimed her brother’s life.

Johnathan Koko-Kong and Richard Kealoha Kaauwai are accused of murdering Alfred Kailihiwa, 71, last Thursday near Lalo Street.
Officials said the attack occurred while Kailihiwa and his sister, Valerie Kailihiwa, were feeding cats.
Police said the suspects were initially upset about Kailihiwa’s bright headlights. They allegedly attacked after Kailihiwa pepper-sprayed them.

Valerie Kailihiwa described the violence on the stand during Wednesday’s preliminary hearing.
“I was thrown to the ground and the bruises on my arm, the bruises on my knee trying to stand up,” she said. “He took the flashlight away from me and just kept yelling, ‘I’ll teach you *** a lesson. I’ll teach you a lesson.’”
Family members previously told Hawaii News Now bystanders intervened, saving Valerie Kailihiwa’s life.

Koko-Kong and Kaauwai are currently being held without bail.
