Police investigate alleged theft of luxury items on Maui

WAILEA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui police launched a theft investigation after three suspects allegedly stole more than $80,000 worth of luxury items from The Shops at Wailea Tuesday night.

According to the Maui Police Department, at 8:30 p.m., officers responded to 2750 Wailea Alanui Dr. after three male suspects entered a store and allegedly stole three handbags valued at about $77,950.

Officers then located and detained two suspects, an 18-year-old Miami man and a 15-year-old Lahaina boy, after they had reportedly entered another store within the shopping center, MPD said.

Investigators said the same group had allegedly stolen a handbag and wallet valued at about $1,980 and a polo shirt valued at about $1,500 from a second retailer.

Police identified a third suspect as a juvenile male who fled the area before officers arrived.

The 15-year-old was taken into custody and later released to his parents pending further investigation.

The 18-year-old was arrested and taken to the Kihei Police Station for processing. He was later released after posting $6,000 bail.

On Wednesday, officers executed a search warrant for a vehicle believed to be used by the alleged suspects and found five luxury handbags, $378 in cash and 0.93 grams of suspected cocaine.

The investigation is ongoing.
