Woman arrested after crash critically injures motorcyclist in Wailua

WAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kauai police arrested a woman after a crash left a motorcyclist in critical condition.

The crash happened Wednesday at around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Kuamoo Road and Waikolia Street in Wailua.

According to the Kauai Police Department, a 24-year-old Kapaa woman was attempting to turn left onto Waikolia Street and allegedly crashed into a 57-year-old Lihue man riding a motorcycle.

Police said the motorcyclist was thrown onto the road upon impact and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to Wilcox Medical Center, then medevaced to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition.

KPD said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

Police said the driver was uninjured. She was arrested at the scene on suspicion of negligent injury in the first degree, inattention to driving and driving without a license.

She was released pending further investigation.

The department said the driver’s history includes more than 70 misdemeanor arrests, including nine traffic citations and five arrests for driving without a license.

Kuamoo Road was closed in both directions for about two hours during KPD’s on-scene investigation.
