Suspect charged in Wahiawa McDonald’s stabbing

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A man accused of stabbing another man inside a McDonald’s restaurant in Wahiawa has been charged.

It happened at around 3:15 p.m. Monday on Kamehameha Highway.

According to police, Austin Otto Smith, 24, allegedly stabbed a 66-year-old man as he sat inside the restaurant and fled carrying a skateboard.

The victim suffered critical injuries, Emergency Medical Services said.

Smith was arrested at around 6:30 p.m. that same day and initially booked on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police said after conferring with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, the case was reclassified.

Smith was charged Wednesday with assault in the first degree, assault on a law enforcement officer in the first degree, and resisting arrest.

His bail was set at $100,000.
