Speed limit being lowered on stretch of Hilo’s Puainako Street Extension

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) – Drivers will have to slow down on a stretch of the Puainako Street Extension in Hilo.

The County of Hawaii Department of Public Works announced it is lowering the the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph, effective Wednesday.

The change applies to the section from Komohana Street to about a half-mile east of Wilder Road.

“The change is being implemented to encourage safer driving conditions and improve overall safety for the surrounding community,” the county said in a press release.

DPW is proposing amendments to the Hawaii County Code to make the change permanent. For now, the new speed limit will be enforced under temporary authority.
