The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD), and Emergency Medical Services received a 911 call at 4:25 a.m. for a building fire near 92-715 Nenelea Street in Makakilo.

While en route to the scene, the first responding officer observed flames and smoke rising into the air and upgraded the incident to a second-alarm assignment, requesting additional resources.

Emergency Medical Services pronounced an 83-year-old man dead on arrival after HFD found him unconscious during a search for occupants on the second floor. Another individual, a 77-year-old woman, was evaluated for smoke inhalation but declined further treatment.

The first unit arrived on scene at 4:31 a.m. and encountered heavy smoke and flames emanating from a two-story residential structure.

Firefighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive offensive fire attack, quickly making entry and putting water on the fire at 4:38 a.m. and bringing it under control at 4:56 a.m.

Firefighters then conducted overhaul operations to put out remaining hot spots and check for hidden fire within walls and other void spaces, ensuring the fire had not spread further.

The fire was extinguished at 6:14 a.m.

All HFD personnel were accounted for with no reports of injuries. The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire and to assess damage.
