High school, transfer counselors experience UH Manoa

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Nearly 30 high school and transfer counselors gathered for the first University of Hawaii at Manoa Summer Counseling Institute.

The event was held July 12-15 and invited 27 local counselors and two from Northern California to step into the shoes of a prospective UHM student.

UH said the event was designed to showcase campus life and possibilities.

The university said instead of a standard campus tour, the group spent three and a half days in the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology at Moku O Loe in Kaneohe Bay, going behind the scenes at the Stan Sheriff Center, stepped into nursing lab simulations and explored the Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center and enjoyed a closing dinner at the Waikiki Aquarium.

“People who always think that they know an institution, they think they know a university, to have an experience where they’re walking away thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, my mind has just opened up.’ That was the goal,” said UH Manoa Vice Provost Nikki Chun.

Schools like Kamehameha-Kapalama, Radford and Mililani were just some of the many participating schools.

“I think our students, our local students, they can look to Mānoa as a place where they can meet all of the needs that they’re looking for in higher education,” said Malia Kau, college and career counselor at Radford High School.
