First Alert Forecast: Holiday weekend will be warm and slightly humid

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Fourth of July holiday weekend is shaping up nicely, with moderate trade winds becoming locally breezy as we head into Saturday and Sunday.

Most of the passing showers will continue to favor windward and mauka communities, especially overnight and during the early morning hours, while leeward areas stay mostly dry with plenty of sunshine.

A slightly drier air mass moving in from the east will keep rainfall on the lighter side through the weekend, with lower humidity making it feel a bit more comfortable, especially for afternoon barbecues, beach trips, and fireworks celebrations.

Looking ahead to next week, the trade wind pattern remains in place with moderate to locally breezy conditions continuing. While the first part of the week looks fairly dry, moisture left over from weakening Tropical Storm Douglas in the eastern Pacific could ride in on the trade winds during the middle to latter half of the week.

That may lead to an increase in passing showers, mainly for windward and mauka areas, though widespread heavy rain is not expected.

If you’re heading to the beach over the holiday weekend, south shore surf will build as a new long-period south-southwest swell arrives.

Surf is expected to peak Sunday into Monday, reaching near advisory levels at the best south-facing breaks.

East-facing shores will stay rough and choppy because of the stronger trade winds, while north shores will see only a slight bump in surf before returning to nearly flat conditions next week.
