Officials say the new bins are weather-resistant and fully enclosed, a design intended to reduce litter.
Thirty of the same bins were installed at Kuhio Beach Park in 2024 and had a significant impact on the area.
“We saw the success that it showed, not only in trash reduction and cleanliness, but from the homelessness perspective too,” said President of the Waikiki Business Improvement District, Trevor Abarzua.

City officials say homelessness reduced by 92% along Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenue and are hopeful this installment will lead to a cleaner future.
“It may be a trash can, but this is so much bigger than that,” said Honolulu Mayor, Rick Blangiardi. “This is really about, you know, caring for a place and showing respect and appreciation for the place itself, the people who visit here, and just how we take care of it.”
The bins were funded in part by the Hawaiian branch of Japan Travel Bureau Corp. (JTB Hawaii) and are customized with Hawaiian language and designs.
