3 resource officers to join Nanakuli High in fall

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Three Honolulu Police Department School Resource Officers (SROs) will be at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School at the start of the Fall 2026 school year.

Councilmember Andria Tupola and state Rep. Darius Kila welcomed the SROs, marking an important investment in student safety and student support services.

“School Resource Officers are more than law enforcement officers. They are mentors, role models, and trusted adults who can build positive relationships with students and help connect them to resources when challenges arise,” Tupola said.

It comes after years of community advocacy for School Resource Officers in West Oahu and after the Hawaii State Department of Education launched a pilot program to put resource officers in public schools.

Last year, Tupola introduced Resolution 25-30, which urged the establishment of SROs at West Oahu public high schools. The City Council later adopted the measure.

HPD’s Staffing and Recruitment Task Force later emphasized the importance of school-based programs to address gaps in responses due to officer shortages.

Since January, three retired and re-sworn Honolulu police officers have been at Kaimuki, Kapolei and Waianae High Schools. The three schools have since reported positive improvements across student and campus life.

“We worked diligently to deliver this promise to Nanakuli because student safety must remain a top priority, and the expansion of the SRO program comes at a critical time ahead of the new school year,” Kila said.

“Every student deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment,” Tupola added.
