According to NOAA Fisheries, Rocky, a 26-year-old Hawaiian monk seal, gave birth to her 16th pup last week in Kalaeloa on Oahu’s west side.

Experts said 12 of Rocky’s pups were born on Kauai, where she was born. Her other three pups were born on Oahu, including one at Sand Island and two at Kaimana Beach.

Rocky gained widespread attention in 2022 after she attacked a woman who got too close to her and her pup at Kaimana Beach.

Wildlife officials are reminding the public to stay at least 150 feet away from monk seals, especially mothers with pups, to avoid disturbing the animals and to ensure public safety.
