Kamaka Ukulele Marks 110 Years

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A well-known local ukulele maker is celebrating 110 years in business this week.

Kamaka Ukulele is the original creator of the pineapple ukulele, which is widely played throughout the islands. World-renowned artists, including Jake Shimabukuro play their instruments.

The company is still owned and operated in Hawaii by the fourth generation of the Kamaka ‘ohana.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi will recognize Kamaka ‘Ukulele’s June 18, 1916 founding date with a proclamation signing on Wednesday, a day ahead of the anniversary. Several other events will be held to mark the milestone including a gala concert at Rock a Hula in the Royal Hawaiian Center on July 10. The concert is hosted by the International ‘Ukulele Festival of Hawaii. Tickets are available now at kamakaukulele.com
