UH baseball legend celebrates 90th birthday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – On Sunday, family and loved ones celebrated one of Hawaii’s legendary baseball coaches, Les Murakami’s 90th birthday.

For the past four years, he has celebrated his birthday with taiko drummers.

Murakami’s birthday falls on June 1, but celebrations were held Sunday afternoon with family and friends.

“Well, 90 don’t count. It’s 100, haha,” Murakami said.

Coach said in one word that his 90th birthday was “fantastic.”

Murakami was known for coaching the University of Hawaii at Manoa Rainbow Warriors baseball team. The baseball stadium at the university is named after him.
