HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Waianae summer food program is supporting thousands of children each week with local groceries.

Kaukau 4 Keiki gives families meal boxes filled with enough locally sourced ingredients to make 14 meals a week per child.

“We’re here to help the community, that’s what it is,” said Food Hub Specialist Pikake Demotto-Lum.

The organization goes through the food bank for families, handing out meal boxes daily at 10 distribution sites on Oahu, from June to July. Kahumana Organic Farms does so on behalf of those in Waianae.

One former recipient recalls what it meant to have this supplemental food program available to her when she was a keiki.

“It was actually really helpful, I’m not gonna lie,” said Candace Cabansha, who is now a college student. “My parents always had long hours at work. My mom and dad didn’t come home ‘til five in the afternoon. I was in high school when I was a part of this program, and it really helped build meals for my brother and I.”

At Friday’s distribution, Kahumana Farms served around 600 boxes to those in need.
